Tatiana Bolotova - Russian-born illustrator and photographer knows one or two things about fashion. A regular at London and Paris Fashion weeks, she has just finished the famous Central Saint Martins, rubbing shoulders with the rising stars of the industry. She talks art, style and future plans while getting ready in her Maimie’s.

What inspired you to illustrate?

I’ve been always drawn to it as a child, I would always stay in my room painting and drawing rather than play outside, I have no idea why.

What do you love most about what you do?

The fact that with white paper and a pencil you can create a new reality, something that doesn’t necessary exists - it’s the only complete freedom. My imagination has always been very rich, and it’s been a liberating outlet. I love creating stories and illustrating them, breathing life into my characters. The arts school I went to as a child has given me the basics and the technique.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Depends on the subject. Mostly I get inspired by people that surround me, snippets of emotional conversations - I act a lot on my feelings and intuition, it’s what gets me going. The simple things in every day life, for example, different people on the tube are my daily inspiration.

 What is your life motto?

It could sound cringy but YOLO. Life is happening here, right now and we need to live every day to the fullest and with no regret.

Where is your favourite place on Earth?

Bali, Indonesia. It’s truly magical - the atmosphere, blazing sun, kind and loyal people, the feeling that anything is possible. There are so  many talented and free people, and life is simple. One day I would love to open an art studio there.

Favourite food?

Sushi, Russian Borsch, Vietnamese soup Pho and honey cake. Not all at once of course!

How do you unwind/relax?

One of the best remedies for stress and tiredness is a warm bath with a Lush bomb and bubbles. Second best is watching Friends with a glass of wine - it’s the best.

What are you working on now and what is the plan for the future?

I’ve just finished the university - I was studying Graphic Design - and at the moment I’m resting and freelancing a little. I want to take some time to think about the future, not to rush anything. I would like to develop my skills and keep creating, whether it’s illustration, photography or graphic design but I also would like to travel the world and see what’s out there, have some adventure. I have a chance to live and work in Australia, which is slightly intimidating but also exciting.

How would you describe your style?

I love comfortable clothes made out of natural, organic materials like silk, cotton and linen. Being always on the run, sometime sneakers and a hoodie win over nice dresses and elegant shoes, which I’m very aware of. I embrace my femininity through unusual and elaborate jewellery and headwear, for example bright turbans.

What is your favourite thing about Mamie?

With Maimie I don’t have to try to be feminine - it’s so effortless and chic, it makes me feel like a goddess. As I said, quality is a big one for me, nothing makes me happier than 100% natural and well-made garment.
